Participation of a German delegation to visit the German Russian Forum Biotechnology in Kazan (September 2012)
Gunter Festel was part of a German delegation at the German Russian Forum Biotechnology on 11th September 2012 in Kazan, Russia, where he presented the company Butalco. The title of his presentation was "Development of Yeast Technology for Biofuel and Biochemical Production - Yeast Technology and Biochemical Markets".

Gunter Festel, in his role as co-founder and CEO of Butalco, gave a presentation at the international conference on Next Generation Technologies for Bioenergy and Biomass Utilisation on 3rd August 2012 in Singapore. The conference was organised by Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory (TLL) and the title of his presentation was "Commercialisation of Yeast Technology for Biofuel and Biochemical Production".
The French yeast producer Lesaffre acquired the Xylose Isomerase technology from Butalco (August 2012)
The xylose isomerase technology enables an improved production of lignocellulosic biofuels. The improved xylose transporters will enable yeast strains to ferment xylose simultaneously with glucose. With this transaction, Butalco was able to strengthen its R&D programme.

Invitation as keynote Speaker at the Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference in Rotorua (February 2012)
Gunter Festel was invited as a keynote Speaker at the Agricultural Biotechnology International Conference (ABIC) in Rotorua, New Zealand, within the Visiting Investor Programme of New Zealand Trade and Enterprise. He gave a presentation with the title "Business and Economic Aspects of Industrial Biotechnology - Markets, Business Models, Barriers and Financing" on 5th September 2012.
